Prof. dr. ir. Lonneke Vervelde

“Unraveling the host-pathogen interaction and the immune system drives immune mediated resistance and vaccine protection. At GD I can use my scientific background to support immunological aspects during animal studies and drive innovation in the field of organoids and in vitro models to support the 3Rs goals of GD.”

Biography

Lonneke Vervelde is senior scientist Poultry Health and R&D at GD.

Lonneke graduated from Wageningen University and after obtaining a PhD (1997), she continued her research on immune responses to avian pathogens at the Institute for Animal Health in Compton U.K. In 1998 she moved to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht, The Netherlands where she investigated ruminant immune responses to intestinal parasites and developed helminth vaccines. In 2002 she started her own research group on Avian Immunology and her main scientific interests are ever since focussed on how the innate immune responses to pathogens and vaccines in chicken drive adaptive responses and can be exploited for optimal protection. In 2013 she joined the Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh, where she became professor in Veterinary Immunology and Infectious Diseases. She expanded her research to the field of in vitro and ex vivo mucosal organ cultures and organoids. These systems are multifunctional and can be used to investigate mucosal immunity but also the mode of action of feed additives, drug and toxicology screening, host-pathogen interaction, and as diagnostic tools. In 2024 she started at Royal GD and mainly focusses on immunology, host-pathogen interaction and development of organoid models.

Lonneke has published over 120 scientific papers and was editor of the textbook ‘Avian Immunology’. She is a trustee of the Roslin Foundation and board member of the Houghton Trust and in 2024 Lonneke was appointed as Honorary Professorial Fellow based in the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh.
