Our solutions for studying pig health

Improving, maintaining, and protecting pig health is a top priority for farmers, producer organizations, feed producers, and pharmaceutical companies. However, disease control remains a challenge despite advancements in prevention and treatment.
At Royal GD, we provide a unique combination of expertise, diagnostics, and challenge models to support research and innovation in pig health. Our scientists have decades of experience in swine disease research, studying pathogens such as E. coli, PRRSv, Influenza, and Streptococcus suis. With state-of-the-art laboratories and animal facilities, we conduct large-scale screenings and in-depth studies on the efficacy and safety of feed additives, pharmaceuticals, and pig vaccine development. Find out how we can support your pig health research.

Studies and trials
Our multidisciplinary teams conduct swine health research and pig disease studies in compliance with international standards. We support all phases of development, from regulatory approval to final reporting. We offer the following study types:
Clinical field studies
Royal GD has a strong network of farmers and veterinarians in the Netherlands and extensive knowledge of farm disease status through our Animal Health Surveillance System. This allows us to conduct real-world clinical field studies. As part of the GD Group, we also collaborate with veterinary laboratories across multiple countries, enabling multi-country studies.
Studies on-site
At our state-of-the-art BSL-2 swine facilities, we conduct a wide variety of animal trials, including efficacy studies and GLP safety studies. With our in-house laboratory and R&D team, extensive diagnostic capabilities, necropsy rooms, and histopathology expertise, we manage the entire study process within GD, ensuring seamless execution. Challenge studies
Our challenge models are designed to assess vaccine efficacy, disease progression, treatment impact and and biosecurity in pig farming under controlled conditions. With unparalleled access to Dutch farms, we leverage a vast collection of field samples to continuously improve our models. We have developed and validated the following challenge models:
- Brachyspira hyodysenteriae model, resulting in clinical signs of Brachyspira hyodysenteriae
- E. coli post weaning diarrhea model
- Swine Influenza model
- Streptococcus suis serotype 9 model (Includes both carrier and clinical models)
