Expertise and departments

Over the years, GD has built up a large Research and Development department and we have one of the biggest veterinary laboratories in the world, where we conduct nearly five million laboratory tests every year. GD also has a team of veterinarians, specialists and scientists. They monitor animal health, carry out practical research and develop programmes for the prevention and control of animal diseases. Our staff departments create the right working conditions, so that our experts at the laboratory and in the animal sectors can focus fully on improving animal health.

Research and Development

The Research and Development (R&D) department focuses on development of new products and improvement of existing products. The knowledge gained in the field and in the laboratory is put to good use here. Our main focus is remaining at the forefront of veterinary diagnostics, in terms of both quality and cost efficiency. The team supports the animal sectors with acquisition and implementation of externally financed research, monitoring, problem solving within service provision and answering questions about products and services.

The R&D employees are specialised in the fields of epidemiology and statistics, microorganisms (bacteria, parasites, fungi and viruses) and laboratory diagnostics in the context of bacteriology, (clinical) chemistry, histology, immunology, molecular biology, parasitology, toxicology and virology.

The Epidemiology department contributes statistical and epidemiological knowledge to the development of products, monitoring of animal diseases and research projects. They also organise internal and external courses about epidemiology and statistics.

The R&D laboratory develops and improves diagnostic tests, test quality and usability of commercially available tests, and evaluates new developments in the field of diagnostics.

Veterinary laboratory

Around a hundred employees carry out about five million analyses for our clients every year at our modern laboratory in Deventer. In addition to research into animal diseases, we also carry out research on a large scale aimed at obtaining insight into the overall animal health situation in the Netherlands.

Large-scale diagnostic testing plays a central role at the laboratory. Extensive automation, mechanisation and robotisation allow us to process large sample flows simply and easily. Our laboratory technicians are experienced in the fields of bacteriology, chemistry, immunology, molecular biology, virology, parasitology, histology, pathology, toxicology, clinical chemistry and haematology. The technical quality is monitored by internationally recognised specialists.

Our laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, allowing us to routinely carry out around a thousand different tests. This includes conducting molecular diagnostic tests, for example. Our veterinary pathologists also carry out post-mortem examinations (necropsies) in order to establish cause of death, gain insight into a problem at a farm or rule out certain possibilities.

Animal health

Around ninety veterinarians, specialists and scientists work towards improving overall animal health in the cattle, pigs, poultry, small ruminants and horse departments. But GD also sets up animal health programmes, develops tests, shares its knowledge and develops products relating to animal health, veterinary diagnostics, laboratory research and data at an international level.

The Customer Contact & Administration department is the first point of call for cattle farmers and veterinarians looking for information about any of our products and services. The advisers in this department also carry out all the internal administrative procedures relating to certification programmes, other (compulsory) programmes, participation and projects.

Staff departments

Our staff departments create the right working conditions, so that our experts at the laboratory and in the animal sectors can focus fully on improving animal health.
