In our latest expert session on 6 November, Prof Nauwynck talked about the evolution of PRRSV (law of the fittest) and its genetic basis, and how to control PRRS with a new vaccination strategy and accompanying measures.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has evolved over time with mechanisms to (1) replicate better in its host, (2) spread faster between pigs, and (3) escape immunity. As a result, PRRSV is difficult to control by vaccination alone. However, we can say that the commercial attenuated vaccines are still working and that autogenous vaccines (under development) may be useful.
