Our solutions for studying cattle health

Maintaining optimal cattle health requires expertise in key areas such as claw health, udder health, gut health, and respiratory health. Each of these fields demands specialized knowledge, diagnostic tools, and research-based solutions.
At Royal GD, we are internationally recognized for our expertise in bovine health research, particularly in udder and claw health. In addition to our world-class specialists, we offer advanced diagnostic assays and validated animal models to support the development of pharmaceuticals, feed additives, and biologicals. Studies and trials
Our multidisciplinary teams conduct bovine health research and cattle disease studies in compliance with international standards. We support all phases of research and development, from regulatory approval to final reporting.
We offer the following study types:
Clinical field studies
Royal GD has a strong network of farmers and veterinarians in the Netherlands and in-depth knowledge of farm disease status through our Animal Health Surveillance System. This allows us to conduct clinical field studies in real-world conditions. As part of the GD Group, we collaborate with veterinary laboratories across multiple countries, enabling multi-country studies.
Studies on-site
At our dedicated research farm near Deventer, we can house up to 40 dairy cows for controlled studies. This facility allows us to:
- Conduct targeted research with separate animal groups
- Perform quarter-specific milking in our specialized parlour
- Run challenge studies on calves and dairy cows
Challenge studies
Our challenge models assess vaccine efficacy, disease progression, and treatment strategies under controlled conditions. With unparalleled access to Dutch farms, we leverage a vast collection of field samples to develop reliable disease models. Our validated challenge models include:
- E. coli mastitis
- Staphylococcus aureus subclinical mastitis
- Cryptosporidium parvum calf diarrhoea
- E. coli calf diarrhoea
- Currently in development: calf respiratory disease model
